Project environment: A EUROPEAN VIEW TO CULTURE AND TRADITIONS OF THE PYRENEES
The project is structured in 3 axis:
1. Link between the volunteer and the host community: the Pyrenees and Europe. The young people will let young people know what Europe is and how to use all opportunities it provides. We carry this out in l’Alt Urgell, Pallars Sobira and Vielha and Pyrenees in Lerida. We carry out the following activities:
a. European Week (May 2011). Schedule of events: workshops, lectures, games …
b. Education and awareness workshops in secondary schools of the territory.
2. Enter the host culture. The views of EVS volunteers of our culture and traditions. How volunteers see our culture during all events and actions during the EVS. We want to make volunteers observe and participate in our culture. Calendar of activities:
a. Observer: they will go to events and activities, they can film, do interviews and write about what they observe,…
b. Active participant: in some activities (fairs, parties, cultural activities,…), promotion of their culture and values of volunteering,…
3. Diseminate their culture. This project shall also show our local people other realities in our plural Europe. And that the essence of all states are its traditions, which should not be lost.

Local Community:
The territory of Alt Urgell has 19 municipalities, with 22,000 inhabitants, 6,000 of them are young people aged between 16 and 35 years, mostly living in the regional capital, La Seu d’Urgell. There is parity between men and women, immigrants come mainly from Europe and America. It is located in the Catalan Pyrenees, at the border with Andorra.

La Seu d’Urgell is a major road communication network, linking the Pyrenean axis (N-260) and Segre (C-14) and the road to Andorra (N-145), currently the only from Spain. The rural road network has improved significantly. The region’s economy, traditionally based on agriculture and livestock, is now varied, with a strong presence of the tertiary sector. Currently, some traditional holidays are kept in Alt Urgell.

We also participate in 2 territories (we have collaboration agreements with them):
Pallars Sobira, with 7,625 inhabitants (IDESCAT 2009), of which 1,979 are young people aged between 16 and 35 years. Located in the Catalan Pyrenees. The other town is Vielha-Mijaran, a municipality in the region of Vall d’Aran, high mountain region, border with France, with 5,710 inhabitants (IDESCAT 2009), of which 2,018 are young people aged between 16 and 35 years (35.34%).

Accommodation of volunteers
Volunteers will live in la Seu d’Urgell, where they will carry out most of their activities and with most services: transport, supermarkets, leisure,… to be self-sufficient). In a flat which may be shared with local people (young people or we may contemplate sharing it with older people).

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
” Service and learning opportunities

We aim to link education and solidarity in our region. We want to carry out a useful project for everyone, from the social point of view.

Volunteers will have a mentor they can contact at any time who will guide the project and be the mainstay of the service and learning process. They can guide and reinforce the actions of volunteers.

We will provide accommodation shared with local people to manage more integration in l’Alt Urgell, so all basic needs are covered and can carry out other activities (sports, languages,…) and integrate in the local community (and lead to an exchange of knowledge).

We can provide language training. They will receive Spanish and Catalonian language classes to help them understand better the project and integrate better in the community.
They can also participate in language exchanges with the local community.

Specific training about the operation of the youth office, youth policies, mountain territories (customs, information,…), resources for our daily operations,… provided by the technicians of our host administration. The base is the handbook for volunteering trainers in Castilla-La Mancha and the volunteering laws in Catalonia.

Training may continue depending on the needs of volunteers or the organisations.

Other resources to strengthen learning could be a blog to monitor the activities, managed by volunteers and people involved. They can also use the youth service’s monthly e-bulletin, web, facebook and may diffuse it through youthtube.

” Role of EVS volunteers in the host organisation and activities

Volunteers will disseminate, with the mentor, European mobility programmes and may prepare presentations, workshops or inform young people about specific programmes. Their participation preparing the European week, in May.

Within the other 2 axes, volunteers can decide how to approach the observation and transmission of culture. The project is centred on the popular culture of l’Alt Urgell, so they may participate in most of the events taking place here and some of the ones taking place in Pallars Sobira and Vielha.

General aim:
Disseminate the YiA programme in the territory (and inform and guide young people) and approach our traditional culture and participate in it (as well as exchanging knowledge and traditions).

Tasks (fulfilling both aims):
1. Personal workshops for the dissemination of the EVS in schools and leisure centres.
2. Support the organisation of the European Week with the team.
3. Support all activities and events in the territory and inform about their culture.
